Chapter Twenty-One

The next morning Roxanne came out of the bathroom to find Philippe sitting on the edge of the bed staring at a large brown envelop in his hands.

"What's that?"

He looked up, a faraway look on his face. “The police report."

She took a seat next to him, resisting the urge to comfort him. He still hadn't changed since his shower, wearing dark blue jeans and nothing else, exposing his bare muscular chest.

"Aren't you going to open it?"

He opened the envelope and began reading to himself. She sat quietly by his side until she could wait no longer. “What does it say?"

His gaze remained on the printed pages. “I'm not sure. It doesn't appear to be all here. There are conflicting details in it as well."

"Why do you say that?” She leaned in to read the report.

"Do you mind?"

At his sharp tone, she jumped back, their gazes locked. The intensity in his dark eyes sent shivers down her spine. He flipped the report closed and threw it on the bed.

"It's too damn short. Five pages! For a death report, that's too damn short."

Roxanne resisted the urge to reach around him for the report. “What does the report say, Philippe?"

"According to the death certificate, the coroner declared my father's death accidental. Twenty-three years ago, the coroner's office probably didn't require a lot of paper work.” He sprang to his feet.

Roxanne grabbed the report and flipped the pages, scanning it. Then she checked inside the brown envelope for more. Only a one page letter that introduced the report was in there. She disregarded it. “Shouldn't the full autopsy report be in here? I don't see it in here."

Philippe began pacing in front of the window still covered with thick drapes. Without breaking his stride, he spoke. “Yes, it should be, but it isn't. I've seen more paper work for running a red light. Something just doesn't add up here. There are no witness statements and only a general statement from the coroner, confirming he died from a heart attack.” He turned to her, a look of disdain on his face. “Commissioner Brown sent an apology for the lack of information, claiming some paperwork got destroyed or misfiled over the decades."

"You think they're withholding information from you, aren't you?"

Philippe froze in mid-stride and nodded. “Someone doesn't want us to find out the truth."

She dropped the report back on the bedspread. “Who?” she asked, watching Philippe take a black t-shirt from a drawer. Her attention went to his abdomen, muscles contracting and expanding as he pulled the t-shirt over his head. Despite the seriousness of their conversation, she itched to reach out and smooth her hands over his six-pack.

He caught her looking and gave her a pointed look. “The killer."

She nodded and forced her attention back to their conversation. “How do we find out who he or she is?"

"It has to be someone who benefited from my father's death and could still lose a lot, if the truth about the past were revealed."

"Okay ... what's our next move?” she asked, concern in her voice unmistakable.
